For those of you not familiar with Hiras (a Japanese word for "palm") the concept is a tamper similar in size to a pipe (at least most of them) designed to be held in the palm of your hand with your first finger drapped over the front of the piece down towards the tamp end. It may sound odd but Hiras are extremely ergonomic and offer a collection option for a tamper more akin to a pipe. Briar is the predominant material with the use of Cumberland and acrylics for bands or sections of the piece. New variations are planned with the use of bamboo and metals such as aluminum as well as Mokume Gane. A synethesis of Hira and Shrooms is also planned as a natural development for Hira is to go the way of the Shroom (and vice versa). In some ways the new Progeny line is an indirect evolution of the Hira. Progeny has it's earliest roots in a volcano shaped Hira that I have been working on for many months.
Above you can see a sampling of the Hira created to date. All are sold but Hira will be seen again just a bit down the road.
